Audio Description (UK)

[last updated: 28 March, 2005]

Enjoy Audio Description on: TV, DVD, cinema and at the theatre.

Into a bit of audio description, eh? Ya like being able to follow the narrative so that you don't have to guess what's going on or make up your own little personalised in-head stories? Well here are some useful links to help you get the most from Audio Description at home or out on the town. email us if you have any more links we should add to this page.

Television Listings

You can receive Audio Description with a standard Sky Digital box by simply selecting 'narrative' in the languages menu currently set to English.

Via Freeview is more costly. You need to buy an I-Player Freeview box. It costs around 120 pounds. Call 08000 153092 for more details.

There is also a PC card available so you can receive AD via your computer. Call Nebula Electronics on 01689 885009

Cinema and DVD

It now seems that most films are audio described! But the question is, is your local cinema fitted with audio description technology? And, being as usually only one screen in enabled cinemas will have that technology, which film is it they have chosen to put in the AD-enabled screen this week?

This week's AD cinema listings - This link takes you right through to the cinema listings on the excellent YourLocalCinema.com.

Note that this page also gives you details of cinemas close to you with AD ... as well as other cinema info and a long list of commercially available DVDs with audio description on them that you can purchase or hire from a video rental store.

Theatre

Get live audio description at the theatre! Here are some useful links that take you rright through to the AD page you want.

Oh and in case you don't know what we're talking about, Audio description is to visually impaired people as Subtitles are to deaf peple. It's an extra soundtrack that fills in the narrative during the silent bits to aid understanding so that visually impaired people don't hav to guess what's going on - now we're told. On TV and DVD it is a separate soundtrack that you can select via digibox menus and at the theatre and cinema it's delivered via headphones so that no one else in the audience can hear it.
Note that an ever-growing number of commercially available standard DVD movies also now have audio description on them, we recently rented The Village and Thirteen Going on Thirty from Blockbusters and were pleasantly surprised to find 'Audio description' as an option on the menu of these disks.

Note also that RNIB produces audio described videos. Call them on 08457 023153 for more info about the titles they have made available. You can email The Editorif you have anything to say about your experience of audio description or have any good AD tips to pass on.
