The Book Section

Books before we die!

This section of BlindKiss is dedicated to the issue of access to books.

BlindKiss supports the Right to Read campaign from RNIB and partner organisations - calling on government, publishers, booksellers and libraries to play their part and deliver the Right to Read.

Right to Read week starts 20 October 2003 - we urge you to give it your full support. Go to their website for the latest info on their survey asking for details on your experiences of getting books (for leisure, work or study), we urge you to write in to campaign@rnib.org.uk and take part.

Tell us about books you've read lately

If you have just read an accessible book in any format (commercial tape or CD, RNIB Talking Book, Calibre, Braille, large print, illegal text download, etc) then email us, tell us what you thought of it and give us details on how to get it - we'll publish them here on BlindKiss. Also tell us if you have scanned texts you're willing to share! (confidentiality assured)

Latest accessible books

Heligoland by Sheena Mackay, The Wee free men by Terry Pratchett, Scott Free by John Gilstrap are some of the latest books on sale from Isis Publishing, who specialise in producing unabridged audio books on CD or cassette.

Useful links

Here are some websites where you can get hold of books in accessible format:

BRAILLE: National Library for the Blind UK
AUDIO: Calibre lending library
AUDIO: Isis Publishing
AUDIO: Audio Book Collection

RNIB Talking Book still do not have a website, come on, buck up your ideas, you have been telling us it's coming for almost five years now! It is still very difficult to know exactly what books you've got on offer!

Comments on Access to Books and The Booker Prize
In 2001, BlindKiss helped to highlight the fact that NLB (whom we refer to as one of the gatekeepers of cultural access for blind people) had chosen not to make any of the Booker Prize shortlist available in Braille. Find out what our readers had to say on this issue and on access to books generally.

You can email The Editor if you have anything to say on this issue, or anything else!
